April 2010:

AMA 2010 Jack B. McConnell, MD Award for Excellence in Volunteerism

The Jack B. McConnell, MD Award for Excellence in Volunteerism recognizes the work of senior physicians who provide treatment to U.S. patients who lack access to health care. This year, in association with Pfizer Inc., the AMA Foundation has honored two physicians with this award: Zaven S. Ayanian, MD, FACP at the Parker Family Health Care Center in Red Bank, New Jersey, and Robert Kendall, MD at Our Health, Inc.

We are pleased that a VIM Alliance physician was selected for this award. Dr. Ayanian was the second physician volunteer to be recruited to launch the Parker Family Health Center in 2000. Over the past nine years, this clinic has evolved from a walk-in clinic open two nights a week into a comprehensive health care source that serves patients six days a week. During this time, Dr. Ayanian has helped build an organization that provides 10,000 patient visits annually with support from 200 volunteers. Watch the video about Dr. Ayanian.

Dr. Kendall is the catalyst behind Our Health, Inc., which provides coordinated, high quality health care to low income, uninsured and underinsured citizens of Frederick and Clarke Counties and the city of Winchester in Virginia. Started in 1999, 29 different agencies are now linked together through Our Health.
